How Fast Can You Get an EIN for Your Business?

The step-by-step process, processing times, and what causes delays

How Fast Can You Get an EIN for Your Business?

The Quick Answer

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is essential for anyone handling U.S. tax matters — whether you're a business owner or an individual applicant. Standard processing by fax takes 20-25 business days. An expedited Express EIN service can deliver a number in 2 business days, though it comes at a premium and is only available to SSN holders with a corporation. Cloudtech manages the entire process end-to-end, from document verification to IRS submission.

Two Ways to Apply

First, decide whether you need an EIN for a business or as an individual without forming a company.

  • As a business/company: company formation documents, proof of residential address, a business description, your signature, SSN (if any) or ITIN, a personal ID (clear passport or other government ID photo), and a U.S. mailing address.
  • As an individual (no U.S. company): your signature, SSN (if any) or ITIN, and a personal ID.

The 8-Step Process

  1. Determine whether you're applying as a business or an individual.
  2. Cloudtech verifies your submitted documents and flags anything missing or incorrect.
  3. We prepare your EIN application (Form SS-4) with accurate details.
  4. The completed form is sent to you for a physical (or digital) signature.
  5. You sign and return the form.
  6. We fax the form to the IRS for processing.
  7. The IRS begins processing your application.
  8. Your EIN is issued once processing completes successfully.

Processing Times

RouteTypical Timeline
Standard processing (by fax)20-25 business days
Express EIN (SSN holders with a corporation only)2 business days
Exceptional cases (errors, high volume, IRS delays)30-45+ days

What Delays Your Application

  • Incomplete or incorrect SS-4 form — missing details or names that don't match passport or business records
  • Mismatched documents that don't meet IRS requirements
  • An expired or invalid identification document
  • No eligible U.S. mailing address
  • A vague or incorrect business description
  • Errors in SSN or ITIN details
  • External factors: U.S. holidays, IRS rush seasons, high application volume, misplaced documents, and internal IRS processing delays

When the IRS Just Runs Slow

Sometimes, even with a flawless application, the IRS delays processing without explanation — most often during tax season or periods of high workload. As a third-party service provider, Cloudtech has no control over IRS processing time or internal decisions once your fax has been sent. In the fastest recorded case, an EIN was faxed back within two business days of submission. In the slowest, a client's application sat pending for over six months with no updates from the IRS.

Cloudtech's Role — and Its Limits

Cloudtech facilitates your EIN application by verifying documents, preparing the paperwork, and submitting it to the IRS. Once the fax is sent, though, we have no control over the IRS's timeline or final decision. Our support team follows up regularly for updates and passes along any additional information the IRS requests — but we cannot guarantee an exact processing time or the outcome. The final decision and timeline remain solely with the IRS.
